Do you mean I should run autoconf on each platform where GCC is available to get an answer? I'm sure you don't think this is a practical suggestion, which leaves me wondering what you really mean.

Why?

You don't have to have one. But a non-answer is worse than no answer.

Then the documentation is seriously misleading.
