I don't think it would be technically difficult to add an -f switch
that did this.

OK, well, register me as wanting it. With a combination of -fno-working-directory and this, it becomes possible to do builds in different directories and compare them. (I think -- I may have missed another place where directories get tucked, but I don't think so.)
