Well, I'd rather not post it for two reasons:

- I am not the original author of these changes (I've only made further
  changes to what Nathanael did)
- When discussing it with Mark, he said he preferred to postpone these
  after 3.4

So I'd rather let Mark give his OK, and have Nathanael do the merge since
he knows this area of the makefiles, directories better than me.
