Frankly, how anyone can propose the semantics you did propose, contrast  
those with Zack's, and call *Zack's* version "a mess", is beyond me.

Your proposed semantics are one of the worst-defined and most illogical I  
ever heard, whereas Zack's version seems entirely obvious (and in fact a  
clear improvement on what the language standard gives).
