The kernel which I compiled using the steps outlined in:
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2002-03/msg00956.html

boots and runs fine:

% uname -a
Linux loquat 2.4.18-0.4 #1 Sun Mar 17 12:14:11 EST 2002 i686 unknown

% cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.4.18-0.4 (root@loquat) (gcc version 3.1 20020308 (prerelease)) #1 Sun Mar 17 12:14:11 EST 2002

% gcc -v
Reading specs from /u0/test/gcc3.1/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.1/specs Configured with: ./configure --prefix=/u0/test/gcc3.1 --enable-checking --enable-languages=c,c++ --enable-threads --enable-shared Thread model: posix gcc version 3.1 20020308 (prerelease)

% config.guess
i686-pc-linux-gnu

The IA64 problem should definitely be fixed before the release.
