Default Build Target Question

Howdy,
The documentation and FAQ are silent about this issue and I am not sure how to
tell so...
if I build gcc from source and use "configure i686-slackware-linux" will the
gcc so built automatically build as if "-march=i686" is set or will it build
for a -march=i386 by default?
If it is the later, how do I make it the former?
