Don't know about SPEC, but my codes run anywhere from 'about the same
speed' to about a third the speed of the Intel compiler. I suspect
SPECint wouldn't be too far from this.

They won't progress, at least not in any serious way until either a
Corporation decides to invest heavily in GCC or IA-64 boxes become cheap
enough that your average GCC hacker has one.

The hardware will be a lot better, the prices will be a fair bit lower,
and the Intel (linux) compiler will probably still be free. What is it
you want GCC for anyway?

If it's the 'gcc front end' you need, have you seen the 'Open Research
Compiler' http://ipf-orc.sourceforge.net ? It may well be pretty decent
in a year or two.
