I think he wants 'gcc -v'
that reports the version a lot more detailed
(including prereleases, configuration and snapshot date).

Ie:

~>gcc-cvs-3.0 --version
3.0.4

~>gcc-cvs-3.0 -v
Reading specs from /usr/local/gcc-cvs-3.0/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.0.4/specs
Configured with: /usr/src/gcc/gcc-cvs-3.0/configure --prefix=/usr/local/gcc-cvs-3.0 --enable-shared --with-gnu-as --with-gnu-ld --enable-languages=c++ --enable-debug --enable-threads
Thread model: posix
gcc version 3.0.4 20020131 (prerelease)
