I think in fact that it is the embedded targets that are tricky. Routine
cross-builds between native targets are just that, routine. After all,
it is the case that ALL GNAT ports beyond the original Solaris port have
been built by doing cross-builds, and indeed many different people have
built cross-ports to all kinds of systems, including by the way NetBSD.

My general impression has been that building cross-ports has been easy
enough that the fact that we can only port GNAT to a new target by doing
a cross-port simply has not been a limitation in terms of moving to new
targets. This is not a small circle of magicians, but a rather large
circle of people who seem to master the issue of building cross-ports
without undue difficulty. It is true that we tell people who are interested
in doing such cross-ports that they should be thoroughly familiar with the
gcc build process, but that's still quite a large class of people.
