I agree. I think private trees are a bad idea. If Red Hat can't use
gcc-3, I think a branch on the FSF tree is a good idea.

I'm willing to work on this. I know Uli and others have already done
some of this work, so please let me know how I can help. (offlist)

I'm also interested in working with you or whoever at SuSe to make
sure that the libstdc++ versions used are similar.
