At the risk of drifting further afield :-), I think we need a little
more outreach to recruit maintainers. I wonder if some people are
inhibited because they compare themselves to the highly knowledgeable
and experienced folks who work a lot with GCC, and think "I can't do
that." But maintenance is not some mystical mantle bestowed on behalf
of St Ignucius :-), it's still the same code with the same problems
and solutions, you just get to take more ownership and put more of
yourself into it - an extremely rewarding feeling.
For instance, blanket-write maintainers and SC members could be
buttonholing regular contributors and saying "hey, have you thought
about taking over XYZ?"
This would also help with patch backlog and maintainer burnout.
