tried that, both with the binutils-2.11.2 tree duplicated inside
the gcc-3.0 tree and first building and installing binutils-2.11.2
and then building gcc-3.0, same behaviour:
../../../gcc-3.0/libstdc++-v3/mknumeric_limits: line 181: 32230 Illegal
instruction "$BUILD_DIR/src/gen-num-limits" >>$OUT_H-t
gen-num-limits failed to execute, exiting.
mknumeric_limits failed to execute properly: exiting
make[1]: *** [configure-target-libstdc++-v3] Error 1
perhaps this has someting to do with the mknumeric_limits thread

Any chance of your giving 2.11.2 a try? It worked for me, and I know
there have been some recent fixes that affected Solaris/sparc, so
perhaps they would affect GNU/Linux/sparc too.
