You may remain with 2.96, so that you get binary compatibility with
C++ libraries that come with the distribution (if this is important
for you). In any case, make sure you get the updates of GCC and all
other Errata for Red Hat Linux 7.0.
GCC 3.0 is certainly worth keeping around too, at the very least, to
be able to easily check whether any packages you develop are buildable
with it.
