__i386__ not defined

I'm trying to compile the latest snapshot on Unixware 2.1
(i386-pc-sysv4.2uw2.1).

Following the textbook native procedure on a clean download (20010115), it
gets a compile
error because __i386__ is not defined.

The line of code that causes the error reads

#if __i386__

The error message is "#if with no expression."

Any ideas on how to correct this? Pointers to docs on platform
configuration?

Here's the error message I get...
