Chill

The Steering Committee has decided to disable the Chill front-end.
The reason is that the Chill front-end is the only front-end that
doesn't use the internal garbage collection machinery, and there are
no active Chill maintainers willing to do the work. We want to
eliminate the old obstack code from the middle end, for simplicity and
for efficiency reasons. But, since the Chill front-end depends on
that code, it will stop working at that point.
I will be working on eliminating this code shortly.
None of the Chill files are being removed or altered in any way; a
1-line configure patch simply turns off configuration of this
directory. The patch has been posted to gcc-patches@gcc.gnu.org.
If you, or someone you know, would be interested in doing this work in
the Chill front-end, please step forward! Your contribution would be
greatly appreciated. Once that work is complete, we can reenable the
Chill front-end.
Thank you,
