I've investigated the points you questioned, and tried to give
some more detail below. The bottom line is they go away once
you have a fully up to date installation, but they're hard to avoid on
the way there.
With regard to the W95 question, it appears that the
pseudo-symlinks need to be discarded and rebuilt to take full
advantage of new installed versions of sh.exe make.exe et al. It
seems there are better versions of ash than the one in the
Cygnus kit. I'm hoping to make some progress there.

Can you send us the contents of your auto-host.h and
auto-build.h?
This problem occurs when using another gnu compiler to
bootstrap, either the egcs-1.0.2 binaries or gcc-2.8.1. Attached
auto-host.h from configuring to bootstrap with gcc-2.8.1. It
doesn't happen again when bootstrapping off a correctly
installed egcs snapshot. I don't find any auto-build.h.

Can you investigate this further? The only thing I can think of
would
be filename conflicts/limitations. Can you please check it?
This appears to be solved by the procedure of getting make-3.77
installed, building binutils-2.9.1, and rebuilding make-3.77 on
top of a fully working installation of binutils-2.9.1. I had not
accomplished that correctly the last time I had the problem.
