This is certainly the plan, and my current mips-sgi-irix6o32 work started
off an old patch of mine to do just that:

Unlike the MIPS Linux/GNU situation, there are problems like different
native assemblers used for O32 and N32/N64 on IRIX 6, and I wanted to work
out issues with the O32 stuff first before starting again with the
integration. With a few exceptions, the irix6o32 configuration is in
reasonable shape now, so I'll start working on the integration in the near
future.
