That (silent propagation of corruption) is a "feature" of the RCS file
format (cf http://www.bitkeeper.com/bk23.html).

Also note the egcs-20000807-20000814.diff.gz fails to apply cleanly to
egcs-20000807 obtained by patching from a 20000530 tarball; the error is
in .brik where the diff expects a different value for tm.texi from what it
actually has.
Some time ago it was suggested that the snapshot scripts should unpack the
current and previous snapshots, apply the diff to the previous one, and
then diff the patched tree against the new snapshot, giving an error if
those diffs are non-empty. Perhaps that idea should be implemented? (No
patch included since AFAIK the snapshot scripts still aren't in CVS.)
