Given that we haven't heard from the original reporter in nine months,
and that we haven't seen this bug come up again, I figure the bug can
be closed. I'm setting it to WORKSFORME, not FIXED, because I could
never reproduce the problem. The "fix" discussed below is very much
a poke-things-and-maybe-it-should-go-away approach.
