cc1plus segv on alpha-linux-gnu

This is on the release branch, with updated from cvs late evening 29th.

The immediate problem is that TREE_TYPE is called for a TREE_LIST, 
yielding garbage.  The variable's name (function) would seem to
indicate that shouldn't have happened.
