egcs installation problems

I ran into two problems when installing egcs on my machine.
1) On my Linux distribution (and I imagine others, as well) there are
links in /usr from cc -> gcc and from c++ -> g++.
If you install into, for example, /usr/local this can cause a
problem. Specifically, the egcs install does not create its own
links from cc and c++ in the install directory. This might
normally go unnoticed, it just means you use an older compiler
once in a while. It becomes more serious if changing something
the old compiler depends on. (I.e., I upgraded to glibc2. Then,
tried reinstalling egcs, and it couldn't detect my macine type
because configure.guess was executing cc (my old libc5 gcc) and
the resulting program was segfaulting. )
2) Some of the permissions are not properly set. I don't recall all
of them, but the libgcc.a, libiberty.a and libstdc++.a are a few.
Also, if I remember correctly, if it created /usr/local/include,
those permissions weren't set properly either, though I'm not
certain of this.
Thanks.
