Using __gnu_cxx::__vstring everywhere

Hi all, is there a documented way to replace std::string with 
__gnu_cxx::__vstring during the compiler configuration step? If not, 
what would be the least intrusive way to hack it? And then, how do I 
verify the the correctness of the hack?

P.S. I don't care about compatibility as we install the versioned .so 
into a distinct location.
