mix of tabs and spaces on indentation

It's standard GNU practice (which was in turn based on common practice).
1 tab = 8 spaces.

It does save some file space (probably around 5-10% on typical source
files), but I think mostly it's a somewhat arbitrary convention, like
all the others which mostly make up coding standards... :]

[To some degree it also reflects the fact that much GNU development is
done with Emacs, which handles indentation and conversion between tabs
and spaces transparently.]
