[v3] thread testsuite modifications

Conform to n2588 error handling or lack thereof, add -pthread in a way
consistent with existing thread tests. I had hoped to avoid replicating
this madness but cannot think of anything especially clever at the
moment. When that time comes, this will be adjusted again.
