I'll get to it, but I'm trying to finish up the include work which is 
more important. Sorry.

There's nothing to revert to: it's been broken forever, although only 
obviously so on non-GNU platforms like solaris. The current state is an 
improvement IMHO. As a stop-gap measure we could perhaps move the 
AM_ICONV call to native-only codepaths in configure.ac: I'll try to get 
this done by EOD today.

Your patch is an incremental improvement: please check it in.
