Ouch. Sorry about this. I have reproduced the powerpc64 compile fails.
(Believed to be the AIX too...)

Looks like a "char" == unsigned char vs. signed char issue. 

Fixed thusly.

It does look like there are a couple of other issues on the execution
side as well... any chance I could convince one of you to swap out
twister_rand_gen with tr1 random?

Paolo, you have some details on this?

tested x86/linux
tested powerpc64/linux
