STL mt_allocator crash in global construcutor

   Yes, I should have been more careful with my words :)  I meant 'alternate 
allocator' (i.e., mt_allocate).

   What's the history of this allocator, then?  Is it new-as-in-recent, 
experimental, old or merely 'alternate'?
