I did that. I removed the whole build dir and bootstrapped from scratch
again. I also removed the entire installation dir before installing, as
I thought I might have old headers lying around causing the problem.
That didn't help, so looking at ChangeLog I looked for related changes.
Reverting the patch and remaking and reinstalling libstdc++ fixed the
problem. Patching again, remaking and reinstalling libstdc++ made the
problem come back.
I'm unable to build mainline, but I'll retry with 3.4 tonight, and
methodically re-do each step.
