fp printing speedup, take 3

Great work!  I just got back into town and am catching up on the list
traffic.  I scanned the patch and I didn't see anything that caught my
eye as missing.  I'll take a closer look today or tomorrow.

In the meantime, Here's a test that I swiped from the old libio
testsuite for this code.  It's not perfect, but it at least puts more
stress on the the number printing than what we have now.
