We currently use the whole string, including the last character.
It seems that it's a space in most locales but I've seen a different
character, too (e.g., '.' in it_IT.* locales on HP-UX: "ITL."). I'm
not sure what's the right thing to do. I guess I ought to read up on
it. A good rule of thumb would be the output of strftime() with the
same format/pattern as for time_put.
