[Patch] Fix libstdc++/12438

Hi!

This is now really straightforward if compared to 12352: just
adding the obvious try-catch fixes the bad memory leak we had:
350-400 MBytes for 1e+6 iterations!

Tested x86-linux, will commit soon if nobody objects.
