[Patch] Fix libstdc++/9182

Hi,

quite straightworward: just add some error checks.

Tested x86-linux, good for 3_3 too, I think.

Benjamin, as a follow up I have in the making a fix for
libstdc++/9875, but perhaps you mean to reorganize 27_io before?

(otherwise, I have also a couple of other patches queued, one,
for libstdc++/9826, quite obvious, IMHO)
