This reminded me of similar errors we ran into with sed and grep
on new Red Hat boxes due to LANG being set to something other
than POSIX. IIRC, sed would give errors for ranges such as [^ -~]
unless in the POSIX locale. Apparently, the behavior is undefined
in these cases and more recent sed versions decided to be pedantic
about it rather than silently accepting it as the older ones did.
