FWIW, with gcc 3.x we have also noticed am increase in compile
times. One of the reasons could be the compiler itself, but
another might also be the size and complexity of the libstdc++
headers. It might be interesting to compare the sizes of
translation units of various implementations. Here are the
results for Rogue Wave libstd 3.1.1 on SunOS 5.7, gcc 3.2 on
SunOS 5.7, STLport 4.5 on SunOS 5.7, and Dinkum C++ Standard
Library on AIX 5.1 with VAC++ 6.0 (after stripping blank lines
and lines beginning with the pound sign):
