When working with paths, it's usually more readable to choose a different
separator character instead of escaping the slash, e.g.,

   CXX=`echo "$(CXX_fake) " | sed 's,gcc/xgcc ,gcc/g++ ,'`

Exclamation points and equal signs are also good candidates.
