I'm hoping the better patch is using functexcept.cc...

Maybe look at the way that the message tests are being run? See the part
of testsuite_flags that does:

 -DLOCALEDIR="@glibcpp_localedir@" 

What's the error (can you post it so maybe we can figure it out?)
