autoconf on gcc-3_1-branch, recursion errors

I'm trying to do some configure changes. As such, I'm running
autoconf....

%aclocal
<bkoz@waller> /mnt/hd/src/src.gcc-3_1-branch/libstdc++-v3               
        

%autoconf
configure.in:5: /usr/bin/m4: ERROR: Recursion limit of 250 exceeded, use
-L<N> to change it

This doesn't happen on CVS head. What gives?

%autoconf --version
Autoconf version 2.13

%aclocal --version
aclocal (GNU automake) 1.4-p5

%m4 --version
GNU m4 1.4.1
