ifstream reads data 8 times on solaris

Has anyone else observed ifstream reading data 8 times on Solaris?

Using gcc-3.0.3 on Solaris 8 a truss of a simple program shows it:

reading 8k
processing 1k
reading 8k (7k of which was already read)
processing 1k
...


I submitted this as bug 5396, but I want to make sure it was not
operator error before I go go back to 2.95 for needed performance.

P.S. This does not appear to happen for Intel Linux.
