PR5286, just in, is essentially a duplicate of PR3860. It adds a "work-around"
of the type

     wstring s = L"hello";
     ws.write( s.c_str(), s.size() * sizeof( wchar_t ) );

which, however, leads to an output 5*4 bytes long.
