Nathan, sorry if I'm misunderstanding you due to my bad command of the English
language, but I would not call a "rigmarole" what is in fact, in the worst case
('nedit') only a *single* click!!

Emacs, even if you don't like it, is a marvelous *GNU* software which has much
contributed to the fame and glory of GNU all around the world. Probably
(honestly, I don't have actual statistics here) the most well known windowed
editor in the world.
