libstdc++-v3 stability?

I was about to ask the list exactly what can and cannot be changed in
libstdc++.  There are tweaks that I'd like to make to the allocators in
stl_alloc.h in order to make them more user-configurable.  Most of the
suggestions (that I've received and given) have involved changing their
names in some way.  (They're all templates.)

I have ideas, but only guesses.

I'm not sure what you mean by compatibility libraries.
