Reading stl_threads.h has been giving me the screaming heebie-jeebies; it
never really made sense how many of those paths we were actively trying
to support, and how many were just sort of "there".  I'm a bit nervous
about changing this one since I don't fully comprehend the gthr-* stuff.
Do you have time to take the axe to this header?
