I'm afraid it's impossible to get it to work correctly in general (*),
but I wouldn't oppose any move towards getting automake to work with
additional implementations of make.

(*) because it prepends the VPATH to any occurrence of a VPATH
dependence, a situation can be constructed in which unrelated strings
end up being incorrectly replaced, breaking the build cmd.  But this
shouldn't stop us from getting it to work in situations in which it
doesn't break.
