ios_base vanishing from shared objects

Starting a couple days ago, ios_base (and I feel some other symbols as well,
but this is most obvious) is flat-out /gone/ from the shared libraries.
It's present in the ios.o file, but not the .libs/libstdc++.so.  It's present
in the libstdc++.a archive, so static linking programs involving any I/O
works okay.

This on i686-pc-linux-gnu.  Any ideas, anyone?
