Yes, I'm aware of the fact that the binutils web pages are a little bit
outdated....

Please, read in detail the first link which I posted in my previous
message: I'm afraid 2.11 (that is, the most recent  released version! :(
will *not* work, unfortunately:

-->   binutils 2.11 release (abort)
        solaris as (ok)
        binutils snapshot 010604 (ok)
        binutils CVS 2_11 branch (ok)

But hold on! 2.11.1 is due for next week...
