Yes, I know it *should* work.  The makefiles are what I'm using as my
examples.  :-)

All the documentation I see says that simply including mode-specific options
as part of the LINK-COMMAND string will work; they are "treated specially".
And they all come after --mode=link, as the documentation requires.
