Solaris `make' problem

I must admit I had never considered that.  Boy is my face red.

The closest we do is to echo the discovered name ("gmake", or whatever)
when printing the last-minute reminder instructions at the end of configure.
That was from the days when we could manually configure and then build,
all on its own, instead of doing it from the top level all at once.

Better late than never.  Or rather, better fail with a good error message
describing the problem, rather than misbehave later with a strange message.
I submit this patch should be applied.
