getchar macro/decl conflict

Current CVS yields

        passed 1 arguments, but takes just 0
  gmake[3]: *** [complex.lo] Error 1

when building src/complex.cc.  Two observations:

+  Looks like we need to #undef getchar, somewhere.
+  Can the diag be updated to check if the number of arguments is 1, and
   if so, print "argument" instead of "arguments"?

Yeah, I'm a stickler for grammar.  :-)
