porting to libstdc++-v3 (<iostream.h> etc.)

Ok, sorry.
The problem is related to multi-threading. This is either because I am using
glibc 2.0.x or because I did not configure libstdc++-v3 for multi-threading.
Karl,
shouldn't --enable-threads be disabled by default ?
For example, as a plain gnome-user I will usually want to do just
./configure --prefix=/opt/gnome && make install && make clean
which would most probably break my glibc 2.0.x.
