Minor correction: stuff is shadowed as correctly as is possible
without the necessary compiler extensions, but they are not
being implemented yet, AFAIK.  (See the DESIGN file for details.)  
The default build doesn't use the shadowing, for that reason,
which means we rely instead on C macros, illegally.
